The path was not an easy one. After a regular season in the Basketball City Ad League of peaks and valleys, the W+K NY basketball team sneaked into the postseason, grabbing the last playoff spot in the last game. Kicking off the playoffs as the 6 seed, we knocked off JWT, the 3 seed. Up next was Grey, who we squeaked by in double OT.
That left one mountain left to climb. One team left to tangle with… Deutsch. After suffering two rough regular season losses, each by a point, we grabbed on to that whole “it’s tough to beat a team three times in a season… right?” Somehow, that worked.
Following the rock fight that was the first few minutes (we’re talking 11-8 with 8 minutes left in the first half), the game freed up, but we still were down 3 at the half. That moved to 6, then 7. Then Charles Hodges dropped this bomb in the huddle: “Just keep playing, guys. We’ll be tied in the next five minutes.” We bought in, and we were. Tough threes from Billy Sholudko and Yosef Johnson coupled with insane play in the paint by Aaron Smith put us up and we didn’t look back. 46-36, the good guys won.
If you stop by the office, the (literally) five foot trophy is at reception. And it’s glorious.
