The first WKNY foos league’s champion was named earlier this month, when Alan Buchanan outfought Nick Setounski in four games. Both athletes prepared extensively for the challenge. Alan’s wife allowed him to sleep in that day to preserve his energy, and both athletes carbo-loaded before competing. Both athletes arranged several cups of water on the lunch table and Alan brought a headband for use between matches. Alan has also “accused” Nick of receiving out-of-office training from foos professionals that the Mad Russian allegedly met at a bar weeks before. Nick has denied these allegations, insisting he stuck to his typical routine of a high-carb low-alcohol diet, strategic deployment of caffeine and mindgames. Early on it became clear that the fan favorite was Setounski, the underdog, despite rumors of petty chicanery. The contest by and large was well-matched, but it became obvious that Nick had discovered how to control games for the majority of the series. The most obvious psychological warfare between the two became apparent in game 6, when alan asked for a timeout after a score, in order to drink some water. Nick refused his request, to the shock of both alan and the crowd. Alan has claimed that this was the deciding factor in what was ultimately the last game of the 2009 WKNY Foos Championships.
